Chapter Fourteen

Georgie moped around the house all Sunday. It was raining out, one of those cold, late-November rains that chilled you to your bones. She made a fire in the fireplace and wished she had a cat. Or a dog. She made a mental note to maybe go to the animal rescue league and find one of each. She was tired of being alone and she finally wanted some company. If she couldn’t find it in the human variety, then she’d happily settle for the canine or feline kind.

She forgot to set her alarm so ended up showing up late to work Monday morning. By the time she arrived, Harper was already into her second cup of coffee. She could tell because it took that many for Harper to look alert, like most people look as soon as they shower in the morning. Her friend was a slow riser.

“Well, good morning, glory,” Harper said, offering up the cup of coffee she’d poured for Georgie, who took it with gratitude.

“Morning, yourself,” Georgie said. “In case you were wondering, I’m all ears about where you got off to Saturday night.”

Harper lifted an eyebrow. “Speaking of getting off… Likewise. I’m all ears about where you yourself got off on Saturday night, my pretty.” She winked at her.

Crap. Did Spencer announce to everyone in Verity Beach that he banged Georgie after the wedding? It was bad enough she’d had to do a veritable walk of shame (granted, it was in her own bedroom, but still, the guilt was equally as fierce), but if he announced it to everyone at, say, brunch, on Sunday, ugh, well, that would suck.

Georgie bit her lip. “Uh, you first.” She pointed at her friend.

“Okay, but you’re not going to get away without confessing as soon as I spill my guts.”

“Spill away.”

“So, I went up to the bathroom and when I was coming out, Noah found me and pulled me into this big room where they store the linens. The next thing I knew, we were on the ground and our clothes were off and oh, Georgie, it was such a bad idea. I know I already said this, and Noah broke my heart something fierce, but every time we’re together it’s just right, you know?”

Georgie kind of knew. For the fleeting three or so times she and Spencer had made love, something about that felt so precisely perfect, it was almost painful to know it wasn’t going to happen again.

“And then I came downstairs to find you and you were nowhere in sight. Before I knew it, Noah was driving me home. He has a way of persuading me, so he came inside and then we spent the rest of the weekend talking and making love and talking some more and then more sex and here we are!”

“To think I believed that warm glow about you had something to do with your second cup of coffee.”

Harper smiled. “Trust me, this was way better than coffee.” She turned to face Georgie, who was seated on the stool next to her at the display counter.
